Bamboo belongs to the grass family and has unlimited qualities and aspects such as, natural antibacterial, anti-fungal properties to ward of diseases and invading insects along with its flexibility and super strength. It just goes with the flow, bends and sways with the wind, and its columns will not break unlike other sources pertaining to wood which may be strong, but may easily break or shatter in the presence of stronger, powerful wind conditions.
Bamboo may mean different things to different people in Asian countries and across the world. It all depends on, with whom the subject is being shared with. But may I say this Bamboo is a grass to be reckoned with.
Bamboo is also the world’s fastest growing grass, can attain height of about 39”or more in a day and takes about a month’s time for the beautifully vertical grass to become perfectly round, and can reach a maximum height in about 6 years’ time ( one type called running can grow to about 100’). There are about 1,000 species of Bamboo in the world.
There are also numerous uses which can be utilized from bamboo; baskets, ladders, tools, slippers (?), music instruments, medicine, accessories such as purses, (pictured above) fiber for high quality paper, weapons in martial arts, landscaping, water filters, houses, reinforcement in concrete, and scaffolding which is stronger than their metal counterparts used in construction. (Seeing it in the movies does it no justice whatsoever!).
Another would be the tasty example of bamboo shoots, which are a food commodity that is exported to various countries. The city of New York, being one of them can be located in specialty grocer shops or organic markets. Believe me it tastes great in salads and provides a healthy dose of vitamins such as vitamin A, B1, B2, and C.
The next time you look at this lovely sustainable commodity which is bamboo, just imagine to yourself how many more things from Mother Earth, human kind hasn’t fully appreciated and hasn’t taken an interest in.
